Light & Wonder’s Social Casino Arm SciPlay Loses Its Chief

Light & Wonder is one of the names UK slot fans see constantly on reels, cabinets and app menus, so a leadership shake-up at any part of the group is worth a look. This week the company confirmed that the boss of SciPlay, its free-to-play social casino division, is on his way out after more than two decades in the business, with the chief financial officer stepping in to keep things steady while a permanent replacement is found.
What’s been released
Light & Wonder announced that
it is parting ways with Josh Wilson, the chief executive officer of its SciPlay social casino division.
Wilson, who has 22 years’ experience in the social casino sector, will depart on October 30 at the end of his current contract.
He is a long-serving figure at the company, having
joined SciPlay as CEO in May 2019 having spent almost 13 years at Scientific Games before Light & Wonder’s 2022 rebrand.
In his place,
Chow will step into this temporary role on November 1, 2026, and will also continue in his role as CFO of the broader Light & Wonder business.
The company has already
initiated a search for someone to succeed him.
Light & Wonder was keen to stress continuity throughout the transition, noting that
SciPlay remains a distinct reporting segment of the company and that there is no change to its strategy for the social casino business or to its portfolio of social casino brands.
What’s changed
Wilson’s exit caps a run that took in some of SciPlay’s biggest milestones. During his tenure he
led SciPlay through its initial public offering and helped build out a portfolio of social casino titles before Light & Wonder completed its buyout of the remaining public shares in 2023, folding SciPlay fully into the wider group.
Before taking the top job he had already worked his way through the organisation, having previously held roles including
COO of social gaming, vice president of product and operations, and vice president of product.
The handover lands at a bumpy moment for the free-to-play side of the business. SciPlay’s
revenue dropped 7% to $187m in Q1, which Light & Wonder said reflected weakness in Jackpot Party Casino players, and performance failed to improve in Q2, with revenue falling by 9% to $182m amid softer conditions across the social casino market and a drop in average monthly Jackpot Party Casino players.
There was a silver lining, though:
this was partly offset by an increase in average monthly revenue per paying user,
and
direct-to-consumer revenues expanded to 29 per cent of total SciPlay revenue.
Where it fits
It’s worth remembering SciPlay sits apart from the real-money slot content that Light & Wonder ships to UK-licensed operators; it’s a US-facing free-to-play arm, so this reshuffle won’t alter what’s on offer at any UK casino site. If anything, the wider numbers tell an interesting story about where the group’s momentum currently sits, since
the whole Light & Wonder business saw its revenue rise in both Q1 and Q2, primarily due to continuing growth in the iGaming segment
– the part of the business that actually supplies the studio’s slots and jackpots to regulated markets like the UK. With Chow overseeing SciPlay on an interim basis and the group repeatedly emphasising stability, it looks like business as usual for players on this side of the Atlantic while the search for a permanent successor plays out.
