Midnite plots first overseas move as UK challenger eyes Canada

Midnite has spent a decade building a reputation as one of the UK’s more inventive challenger brands, and it’s now looking beyond home turf for the first time. The sportsbook and casino operator has brought in a former FanDuel Canada executive to spearhead a push into the Canadian market, a move that also hints at fresh investment flowing back into its UK product.
What’s been released
Dale Tang, former FanDuel Canada Senior Commercial Director, has been handpicked by Midnite to facilitate the challenger operator’s first-ever expansion overseas. United Kingdom iGaming challenger brand Midnite is preparing to launch in Canada, which would constitute its first international expansion outside of the UK and Ireland. Tang brings substantial relevant experience: prior to joining Midnite, Tang worked at FanDuel for five years, all of which were spent in its Canada-facing business, most recently as senior director for commercial, analytics and retention in Canada. Before that, he served in various senior strategy roles with the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation.
Midnite was launched in 2015 by Nick Wright and Daniel Qu, with Wright holding the role of Chief Executive Officer. The Canadian push comes on the back of a well-funded run: Midnite secured $35m in Series C funding at the start of 2026, following a $100m credit facility in October 2025 and a $10m Series B funding round in April 2025. That Series C round was led by The Raine Group through its Raine Partners IV growth equity fund.
What’s changed
The appointment isn’t just about hiring the right person for a new territory; it signals where Midnite plans to direct its capital. After its most recent raise, Midnite said the funds would help facilitate operational scaling and accelerate product development while allowing Midnite to prepare for international expansion. For UK players, that framing matters: a chunk of the same investment fuelling the Canada launch is earmarked for sharpening the product they already use.
The Canadian side of the plan is still taking shape. Tang will lead the sportsbook and casino operator’s market strategy in the country, overseeing its confirmed plans to launch in regulated Canadian markets, pending licensing approvals. Midnite is not yet listed as a licensed operator in Ontario or Alberta, and while Tang’s provincial background narrows that gap, the approval process remains untested for the company. Founder Nick Wright described the move as part of a broader ambition, saying the regulated Canadian market gives Midnite room “to disrupt the industry” and build what he called a localised, next-generation betting and casino experience.
Where it fits
Midnite has built its UK identity around being nimble rather than sprawling, having started life as a dedicated esports book before broadening into a fuller sportsbook and casino offering. It has kept its profile up domestically through shirt sponsorship deals and slot promotions tied to major suppliers, alongside a mobile-first app that’s central to its pitch to younger bettors. The Canada announcement fits that same growth story: rather than standing still in an increasingly squeezed UK market facing tax pressures, Midnite is using its funding to scale outward while still promising continued investment back into the platform British players use every day. Whether that translates into new UK-facing features remains to be seen, but the timing, right after a funding round explicitly tied to product development, suggests UK players may see the benefits of this expansion before long, in the form of app refinements or an expanded game catalogue rather than headline-grabbing launches.
