Betsson Drops betFIRST Name, Goes All-In on Flagship Brand

Belgium’s betting shelves have lost a familiar name this week. betFIRST, one of the country’s best-known sports betting and casino brands, has been folded into Betsson’s main flagship brand, bringing fresh apps, upgraded platforms and new exclusive casino content to its existing customer base.
What’s been released
Betsson Group has launched its flagship Betsson brand in Belgium, absorbing its existing betFIRST operation, three years on from the group’s initial acquisition of betFIRST
. That original deal, struck in 2023, saw the Stockholm-listed operator pay €120 million for the Belgian business, which until then had built its name purely on sports wagering before adding a casino product.
betFIRST was founded in 2011 and had established a strong position in the Belgian market
before Betsson’s involvement. The rebrand does not require customers to do anything or re-register:
the business continues to operate under the existing Belgian licence, which the company says ensures continuity for customers
.
The operator frames the move as following similar brand migrations across several European markets in recent years, marking another step in its international expansion
.
What’s changed
For Belgian players, the headline changes sit on the casino side.
Customers will continue to enjoy the same products and services, now further enhanced by platform upgrades, refreshed mobile apps, and Betsson-branded live casino content and exclusive games
. That means the slot and live-dealer catalogue migrates across to whatever exclusive titles and studio tie-ins Betsson already runs under its main brand elsewhere, rather than staying confined to betFIRST’s standalone library.
Belgium’s existing infotainment layer stays in place alongside the switch.
The firm’s Belgian betting operations will run alongside its infotainment brand, Betsson.sport, which provides content, news, scores, and fan engagement, and has sponsored Belgian football giant Club Brugge since the 2025/26 season
— a workaround given that front-of-shirt gambling sponsorships are banned in Belgian football. Jesper Svensson, chief executive of Betsson Operations, described the move as
“a natural next step in our journey”
, adding that aligning everything under one name should “unlock broader marketing synergies” and strengthen the group’s global identity.
Where it fits
The Belgian switch mirrors a pattern Betsson has already run elsewhere, having replaced its Betsafe brand with the flagship Betsson name in other European markets. It also follows the standard playbook the group used after buying betFIRST in the first place:
Betsson acquired Belgian sports betting operator betFIRST for €120m alongside a strategic casino partnership with Groupe Partouche
, the French-listed land-based operator that holds a Belgian casino licence capable of underpinning an online product.
Belgium is not a small market to be making this bet in.
According to Blask data, Belgium is the 28th biggest gambling market in the world and in Europe’s top 20, with the betFIRST brand ranking as the ninth-largest in the country
.
With the rebrand, Betsson will be hoping to challenge market leaders Star Casino, Unibet and bwin, while furthering the international exposure of the Betsson brand
.
For UK readers it is a useful reminder of how the big European groups operate: brands bought for local market share tend to have a shelf life once a parent company decides consolidation under one global name does more for recognition and marketing spend than keeping a heritage local brand alive. Expect the same exclusive-game and live-casino content strategy Betsson runs in its other regulated markets to show up on the newly rebranded Belgian site in the coming months.
